HIGHER shines its light on the emotional rollercoaster of addiction, told through a gripping love story.

ALT presents HIGHER and its message of hope from playwright Mark Levine with the mission to reduce stigma surrounding those impacted by addiction and the opioid crisis, which continues to affect millions of people from all walks of life in America, and especially the midwest.

During the performance, you’ll experience Benjamin's All-American beginnings, and see how life’s harsh realities align to derail his dreams. As he searches for meaning and belonging, his newfound love, Mara, offers a tempting and dangerous "solution."

Supported by a dynamic seven-person ensemble, watch Benjamin’s journey unfold, leading him to discover powerful ways to rise above his pain, and ultimately to make the hardest decision of his life. This compelling new work explores struggle, transformation, and hope in ways that every viewer will be moved by.

Performances will take place at the Contemporary Arts Center in downtown Cincinnati– not on their stage, but brought to life within gallery spaces, and reimagined in a way you need to see to believe!

Who should attend?

This show was written to engage everyone. Thus the emphasis not just on the story, but the music.

It’s an extraordinarily rare individual who does not have either personal experience, family experience, or a friend or co-worker who has been (or is) challenged by addiction.

From our premiere performances in 2021 audiences universally loved the music and felt the presentation was authentic and stimulating. You will leave the Contemporary Arts Center with a different perspective of addiction than when you arrived.

Q: What about someone in early “recovery”?

A: Certainly. But by all means, come with a friend. There will be a counselor “on call” each performance for anyone triggered by the material and wants to talk it out.

Q: Should family members in addiction come?

A: Absolutely. The show is likely to change the way you interact with a loved one.

Q: What if I’m not, nor is a family member in addiction?

A: Did I mention it’s a rock musical?!! Do you like to be challenged and entertained at the same time? Beyond the fact I can guarantee you’ll love the music, if everyone helps reduce stigma, lives will be saved. 70% of all people challenged by addiction are employed. What happens if you change the way you view them?

Q: What about kids?

A: The short answer is “yes”. You know your kids. There are adult themes (i.e. not Disney) but for middle schoolers, and up, this can be an amazing opportunity to engage. I’ve developed discussion questions (see below) to help everyone continue the conversation.
