Coaching for Families in Addiction
When a loved one is mired in addiction it can be scary, frustrating, irritating and overwhelming. There are a lot of well meaning people happy to offer advice should you overcome the stigma and decide to share.
Some of that advice might sound like this:
“You should kick him out.”
“You need to stop enabling.”
“Tough love.”
“You have to go to Al-anon”
“You need to detach.”
…and a whole lot more.
But how do you know what will be the most helpful in healing your family? Take any post in popular Facebook groups and you’ll find dozens of answers for each question, each passionately expressed.
Yet it still comes back to “what’s right for me and my family?”
This is where individual coaching can help. Let’s take a look.
A coach continues to encourage you and keep you practicing even when you’re not 100% confident in the process. A coach can find “wins” in places where you only find despair.
Working with a coach can reduce your stress and anxiety, empowering you to use the skills your coach teaches. A coach emphasizes the importance of self-care and helps you develop self-care habits that resonate with your personality, strengthens your mind and increases your window of tolerance
A coach gives you feedback. Reading a book can be extremely helpful (and I often recommend them), but a book is passive engagement, not active. A book can’t tell you if the skill you are practicing is being used effectively. Since everyone’s situation is different no single book alone can be the solution for every person. A coach reviews individual homework assignments or a published workbook, enhancing the effectiveness of the material.
Are all coaches the same? I’m pretty sure you know the answer to that question. Here’s what makes me different.
I have over 30 years of experience in the clinical world. Having overcome my own challenges I understand what individuals and family members are going through. I developed a clinical curriculum for a residential treatment program, led therapy and educational groups, and conducted individual counseling for people challenged by addiction. Those years of experience, plus starting Minds at Peace LLC, combined with an Invitation to Change Certification, delivers a unique perspective to share with you, and your loved one.
And because I’m Telehealth through a HIPAA secure platform, multiple family members can engage from multiple places at the same time.
